Rat Snake Moon
In egg-white light—
shadow pines
glide, scaled bellies
to earth, darken
Virginia creeper
& rabbit clover,
blackberry canes
heavy with ruby fruit.
Drunken mollusk
trails glisten,
silver as vole pelts
with a sheen like
velvet. No katydids
or crickets, just
the hush of night,
twinkling with wind
chimes & flashing
fireflies, tiny satellites
orbiting giants.
a little news
My newest collection of poems, Every Note, a Lantern, is now available from Kelsay Books and Amazon. Many thanks to everyone who has already purchased and given this little book of poems a home.
MK Creel, I read these soothing almost hypnotic words as soon as they arrived in my Inbox. And then I read them twice more -- once very, very slowly and then once again as if I were reading these words aloud to my inner child to help her fall asleep. And after that third reading, I realized this is my new "Good Night Moon" for me to enjoy now that I've lived through 3/4 of a century and still sometimes need quiet and gentle images with soothing simple words to help me ease into sleep.
Very good, simple, fine poem- does everything it sets out to do. I just read it to my wife here on the banks of the Ill River. I told her there are a handful of good poets that I love to read and that you are one of them. If you know a few let me know.
